IDAHO POWER
COMPANY DEPLOYS VOLTAGE AND OUTAGE MONITORING SYSTEM
Units will aid in verifying circuit model
Boise, Idaho – May 16,
2002 – Telemetric Corporation, a leading provider
of wireless remote monitoring and control solutions, announced
today that Idaho Power Company has purchased and installed Telemetric
Line Voltage Monitor (TVM1™) products in several regions
of its distribution system. The Telemetric TVM1 reports steady
state voltages, voltage spikes and power outages, and then notifies
system operators of the trouble area to help improve power quality
and customer satisfaction.
Idaho Power relies heavily on their circuit
models to ensure reliability to end customers. As new neighborhoods
are built and businesses open, the additional load requires that
the circuit model be updated. In the past, Idaho Power had two
methods for gathering voltage measurements. First, during periods
of peak loads, feeder voltages would be manually spot checked
with hand-held meters. Data gathered through this method would
be infrequent and required timely site visits. The second method
was to temporarily install equipment to measure voltage levels.
These devices could only be installed for a short period of time
and required several field visits to install, download data on
various occasions and uninstall.
As they sought to reduce labor costs
and a method to gather accurate voltage readings, Idaho Power
deployed the Telemetric TVM1. The TVM1 monitors single-phase power
and reports present voltage status, power outages and line voltage
fluctuations. These units provide a low-cost method for gathering
voltage readings from geographically dispersed locations without
costly site visits.
Monty Mericle, T & D Development
Group Leader reports, “Idaho Power is constantly working
to improve the accuracy of our system monitoring and analysis.
The TVM1 will facilitate our continued effort to fine tune our
model and improve reliability for our customers.”
The Telemetric TVM1 operates anywhere
there is cellular coverage and 120 VAC power. Information can
be accessed through a secure web site, SCADA or Outage Management
System. Automatic notifications alert system operators of alarm
conditions via email or pager. Units are fully accessible over
the secure web site to change voltage thresholds and reporting
logic, thus, site visits are only required for installing and
removing the hardware.
“Installation of the TVM1s was
very straightforward. Once the units were deployed, we could easily
view the status of the units over the web interface. We found
the entire process to be simple and user friendly,” said
Bryan Hobson, Field Engineer, with Idaho Power.
The deployed TVM1 units will remain in
the field for one full load cycle. This varies from one season
to an entire year, if the location has heavy summer and winter
loads. After the peak loads have been accurately measured, units
will be moved to another location.
“Many utilities, like Idaho Power, are looking for low-cost
ways to improve power quality and react to outages more quickly
and cost effectively,” said Ken Barber, Regional Sales Manager
with Telemetric. He continues, “Idaho Power’s use
of the TVM1 is an innovative use of our technology and the product
is ideal for their application. Units are mobile, small, and easy
to install and uninstall as Idaho Power moves the units throughout
their system to gather voltage readings.”
Devices are currently installed and operating
throughout Idaho. Idaho Power expects to expand their use of the
Telemetric units based on the results of the ongoing evaluation.
