COOPER POWER SYSTEMS AND TELEMETRIC TEAM UP TO PROVIDE UTILITIES
WITH COST-EFFECTIVE CONTROL AND MONITORING OF HYDRAULIC RECLOSERS.
Milwaukee, WI, January 20, 2004 - Cooper Power Systems, Inc. and
Telemetric Corporation today introduced at DistribuTECH a new solution to
help electric utilities better manage their distribution systems.
The Recloser Management System (RMS) provides utilities with a cost-effective
means for remotely monitoring and controlling their Cooper types R and W
three phase hydraulic reclosers.
The RMS includes an internal cellular radio providing
true two-way communication with coverage available to 98 percent of the North
American population. By utilizing the ‘control channel’ of the cellular network,
the RMS allows customers to send small packets of data over the existing cellular
infrastructure at a much lower cost than other methods of communication.
No license or local cellular account is required.
Additional features of the RMS include:
- Low cost field installation
- Contact position, lockout status monitoring
- Current monitoring
- Remote tripping and closing
Steven Benna, Cooper Power Systems' vice-president of
marketing, stated, "There are thousands of Cooper hydraulic reclosers in the
field and up until today there has been no cost-effective way to communicate
with these remote devices. Our new RMS will open communications up to nearly
all these devices. The RMS was developed based on significant customer feedback
and is designed specifically to help utilities better manage their
distribution networks," he added.
Scott Schoenherr, CEO of Telemetric, said, “Public
Utility Commissions across the country are pushing utilities to provide higher
levels of customer service. A large part of this is better tracking of outages,
even momentary outages. This is the first device that allows utilities to
track these outages without making costly, error-prone physical inspections.”
