CMS ELECTRIC
COOPERATIVE DEPLOYS TELEMETRIC LOAD MANAGEMENT SOLUTION
MicroRTU units will shed non-essential loads during peaks
Boise, Idaho – September
12, 2002 – Telemetric Corporation, the industry
leader in providing utilities with affordable wireless solutions
for communicating with down-line equipment, announced today that
CMS Electric Cooperative of Meade, Kansas has successfully deployed
Telemetric’s load management system to reduce energy consumption
during coincidental peaks.
The new load management system provides
CMS with real time demand updates from the EMS/SCADA system of
their energy provider, Kansas Electric Power Cooperatives (KEPCo).
If both CMS and KEPCo are approaching a peak load, the Telemetric
system will automatically shed non-essential irrigation loads.
CMS and irrigation customers are then provided with critical information
such as the exact time and duration of the interruptions. Kirk
Thompson, CMS General Manager reports, “The driving factor
for this project was cost savings. The entire system will pay
for itself in just a few of our irrigation seasons.”
To gain the control and flexibility to
manage their load control program effectively, CMS sought a two-way
communication link that could automatically detect a peak and
shut off non-essential equipment such as irrigation pumps. CMS
deployed the Telemetric load control solution based on their communication
requirements and the system was tailored to meet their specific
needs.
Irrigation and air conditioning loads
create a spike in CMS’s peak demand during the summer period
of July and August. Since CMS pays demand charges based on their
peak, load control was an obvious cost savings measure. In the
past, CMS depended on local time and temperature controls to interrupt
load regardless of whether the CMS system or KEPCo were at peak
capacity. This system had several problems such as farmers losing
valuable irrigation time, even when there is no need to interrupt.
In addition, the system did not have a communication link to transmit
data, such as time and duration, from the field to the home office.
