Marietta Power Works to Improve System Reliability with Telemetric's
Wireless Power Quality and Outage Notification System
Boise, ID – October 12, 2006 –
Telemetric Corporation, a leader in end-to-end wireless
communication solutions for the electric utility industry, announced today that Marietta Power (Marietta,
Georgia) has deployed a wireless power quality monitoring and outage reporting system based on
Telemetric’s TVM3 voltage monitors and supporting software applications. Marietta Power installed
Telemetric TVM3 voltage monitors at key points on their distribution feeders. The Telemetric TVM3’s
provide near real-time power quality and power reliability information to Marietta Power operations
personnel via cellular communication to a secure, web-based application. This system gives Marietta
Power better information on power quality and system status at the feeder level – improving
responsiveness and system reliability.
To enhance overall system reliability, Marietta Power wanted a system that could report steady state
voltages and over/under voltage events from key points on their electric distribution system. In
addition, distribution operations wanted automated outage reporting from these key points to
supplement information from their existing SCADA and Outage Management System. Marietta Power
deployed over sixty Telemetric Voltage Monitors (TVM3) to monitor three phase voltage on their
12.47kV distribution system.
The Telemetric TVM3 monitors three phase line voltages and provides real-time notifications of steady
state voltage, momentary/permanent outages and under or over voltage conditions. The TVM3 has
programmable intelligence for power quality set points, including OV/UV set points, trigger times and
reporting frequencies. Each TVM3 includes an integrated two-way cellular radio that communicates
over the control channels of the cellular data networks, with coverage available to over 98% of the
population in North America. The TVM3 units were easy to deploy, with no additional radio equipment,
license or local cellular accounts required. TVM3’s include a back-up battery that allows the units to
report outages following a loss of power.
The key benefits confirmed by Marietta Power were:
- Automated Power Outage Detection & Reporting
- Power Quality Monitoring and Reporting (Momentary and Over/Undervoltage Events)
- All Data Viewable and Downloadable via Telemetric’s powerful web-based applicaitons
- Power outage or OV/UV event notifications can be sent via e-mail, test messages and pagers to
dispatch and operations personnel
- TVM3 is simple to setup and install
- All TVM3 configurations are remotely programmable
Monitoring and programming functions are performed using Telemetric’s powerful web-based
application tools. Marietta Power engineers and operations personnel can manage the TVM3 devices
and view voltage information using these secure web-based tools. Custom alarms and notifications
can be created to notify operations personnel of outage or power quality events immediately as they
happen – via web, e-mail, phone or pager. Custom views and data import/export functions allow users
to create specific reports or export the data to other applications. In addition to the web-based
applications, information can be sent to a SCADA system via DNP 3.0 protocol using Telemetric’s
SCADA-Xchange™.
