KANSAS CITY POWER & LIGHT AND TELEMETRIC TEAM UP TO WIN 2003 PROJECT OF THE YEAR.

Boise, ID – January 20, 2004 - Telemetric Corporation, an industry leader in providing utilities with affordable wireless solutions for communicating with down-line equipment, is pleased to announce that Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) has won the Utility Automation and Engineering magazine T&D Automation Project of the Year Award. The award was presented to KCP&L at the DistribuTECH 2004 Conference today in Orlando, Florida.

This award honors the most innovative transmission and distribution automation technology implementation undertaken by an electric utility for the year 2003. Telemetric and KCP&L collaborated to develop cost-effective field devices, remote telemetry modules, and web-based Graphic User Interface (GUI) applications that use Telemetric’s wireless remote monitoring and control solution.

Bill Herdegen, KCP&L’s Vice President of Distribution Operations said, “KCP&L saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by using the public communication network instead of deploying a privately owned communication network.” He went on to say, “This KCP&L/Telemetric project has opened economic automation options for utilities that previously could not justify the high capital costs of a communication infrastructure for deploying larger numbers of automated devices. The solution is creative, economical, scalable, and ideal for control, alarming, and receiving analog and digital values”.

KCP&L had previously documented O&M savings through eliminating capacitor patrols, saving trips to the field to retrieve operating information or perform switching. Similar documentation existed where automation enhanced customer service and satisfaction; however, this project enabled KCP&L to economically justify automation installations that could not be justified using traditional methods.

Bruce Hogan, Telemetric’s Western Regional Sales Manager stated, “Telemetric’s solution provides any utility with an economic and effective way to use a cost-effective web-based solution to test or apply new automation.” Since Telemetric customers have the option of communicating either through their existing SCADA system or through an intelligent web interface, KCP&L was able to avoid thousands of dollars of information technology expenses.

Telemetric and KCP&L developed and tested integrations for the following products: Siemens MJ-XL™ regulator control, Beckwith M-2001B load tap-changer control, Westinghouse ESV recloser, Turner 69-kV switch, S&C Electric’s Intellicap PlusŇ and their 1000 series capacitor bank controllers, Nu-Lec recloser controls and the GE Harris D20/D25 RTU. These integrations now include 12 suppliers with 25 products, paving the way for other utilities to effortlessly integrate with these products.
